World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is observed annually on 17th May to commemorate the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1865. The day is celebrated globally to raise awareness of the importance of telecommunications and information technology in promoting social development and digital transformation.
The theme for ITU’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2023 is “Connecting the world, meeting global challenges”. The theme illuminates the critical role information and communication technologies (ICTs) play in addressing some of the most pressing global challenges of our age, including climate change, economic inequality, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that the digital transformation of society must be accelerated to ensure that no one is left behind. The theme recognizes that more equitable and sustainable development can only be achieved through global efforts to build resilient digital infrastructure, develop digital skills and ensure affordable access to ICTs. On this day, governments, organizations, and individuals from all over the world come together to carry out activities to promote the importance of ICT and the digital transformation of society.
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2023 provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made so far and chart the way towards a more connected and sustainable future. Sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the People’s Government of Anhui Province, organized by the China Institute of Communications, China Industry and Information Technology Publishing and Media Group, Anhui Provincial Communications Administration, Anhui Provincial Department of Economy and Information Technology, Beijing Xintong Media Co., Ltd., Anhui Provincial Communications The “2023 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day Conference and Series Activities” co-organized by the society and supported by China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, China Radio and Television, and China Tower will be held in Hefei, Anhui Province from May 16 to 18.
