Huawei and GlobalData Jointly Released the 5G Voice Target Network Evolution White Paper

Voice services remain business-critical as mobile networks continue to evolve. GlobalData, a well-known consulting organization in the industry, conducted a survey of 50 mobile operators around the world and found that despite the continuous rise of online audio and video communication platforms, operators’ voice services are still trusted by consumers around the world for their stability and reliability.

Recently, GlobalData and Huawei jointly released the white paper “5G Voice Transformation: Managing Complexity”. The report deeply analyzes the current situation and challenges of the coexistence of multi-generation voice networks and proposes a converged network solution that supports multi-generation voice technologies to achieve seamless voice evolution. The report also emphasizes that value services based on IMS data channels are a new direction for voice development. As cellular networks become fragmented and voice services need to be delivered over a variety of networks, converged voice solutions are essential. Some operators are considering the use of converged voice solutions, including the integration of existing 3G/4G/5G wireless networks, traditional broadband access, all-optical networks EPON/GPON/XGS-PON, etc., to improve network capabilities and reduce operating costs . In addition, the converged voice solution can greatly simplify VoLTE roaming issues, accelerate the development of VoLTE, maximize spectrum value, and promote the large-scale commercial use of 5G.

The shift to voice convergence can improve network capacity and reduce operating costs, leading to improved VoLTE utilization and large-scale commercial use of 5G. While 32% of operators initially announced that they would stop investing in 2G/3G networks after their end of life, this figure has dropped to 17% in 2020, indicating that operators are looking for other ways to maintain 2G/3G networks. In order to realize the interaction between voice and data services on the same data stream, 3GPP R16 introduces the IMS data channel (Data Channel), which creates new development possibilities for voice services. With IMS data channels, operators have the opportunity to enhance the user experience, enable new services, and increase revenue.

In conclusion, the future of voice services lies in converged solutions and IMS data channels, which shows that the industry is open to business innovation. The evolving technology landscape offers ample room for growth, especially in the voice space. Mobile and Telecom operators need to prioritize and maintain their voice services to remain competitive in a rapidly changing market.
